How do you want to spend the rest of your life - aging well or going slowly downhill until death? It's a choice you know, but it does take commitment. As a senior citizen, you can sit on the sofa, eat pizza and drink beer, watch sports or talk shows hour after hour and let time drift by or you can pull yourself up by the bootstraps and challenge yourself by finding a new hobby, learning a new language, exercising, or joining a club - although that may be more difficult given the Covid pandemic.
A Kent State University professor refers to the term optimal aging as "living the best quality of life that you can, given your current state of affairs,” I see that as definition for aging well too. Even if you face a chronic health condition, take care of a loved one, or suffer a life-threatening disease, there are things you can do to live life better.
As the old Spanish proverb says “A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.” A healthy lifestyle is key to aging well and you as the mechanic of your life must keep your mind and body well as you get older.
