A year ago, I knew very little about AI. However, fake news and artificial intelligence's role triggered my interest, and I wrote an article voicing my concerns.
Now, I hear and read about the topic daily. So, I wanted to learn more and share my knowledge with you.
They say AI is a technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities. As I understand it, there are two types.
Generative AI, like CHATGPT or GoogleGemin. These computer programs use AI to create new content, such as text, images, music, audio, and videos. They create new content based on what they learn from existing content.
So it seems to do a web search for you, if I have that right.Conversational AI helps machines interact and engage with humans more naturally. The interactions are like conversations with back-and-forth communication between humans like Alexa or Siri.
I don’t use either.
I read that the latest data from 2023 shows the global AI market is worth $196 billion - an increase of about $60 billion in a year, thanks to increasing practical uses of AI technology. Experts expect the global AI market to reach $1.81 trillion by 2030.
Will artificial intelligence do more harm than good? Proponents say it helps us solve problems like climate change and world hunger while eliminating dangerous and mundane jobs. But critics warn that AI’s current path is dangerous. It will likely concentrate power, reduce jobs, spy on consumers and voters, and threaten democracy.
My impression is that artificial intelligence is here to stay. It can be harmful or good, depending on a person’s awareness of the benefits and possible pitfalls.
While I’m no expert, and there are many websites where readers can gain greater understanding - here is a little of what I found.
Benefits
AI-enabled technology gives older adults a sense of control in maintaining their independence. It can help them adhere to medication schedules, provide social support, and allow them to live independently longer.
AI applications can assist with cognitive support, memory enhancement, and mental stimulation.
In aged care, workforce scarcity and cost are the biggest challenges. AI-powered systems automate repetitive tasks, allowing staff to focus on care and more strategic aspects of their roles.
AI enables multi-tasking and provides opportunities to help reduce human error.
Cost is a significant concern, as some AI-powered tools and devices can be expensive, making them less accessible for older adults on fixed incomes.
There is the potential for increased isolation, as reliance on technology may lead to reduced human contact and social interaction.
AI can lead to unfair and inaccurate diagnoses, treatment recommendations, and resource allocation in health care.
The video shows how AI technology can help spammers impersonate criminals, politicians, or loved ones, leaving older adults more vulnerable.
I’ve watched AI grow dramatically in the past year. I use the technology, but I have reservations. It's good to use - but with caution, right?

AI is like the internet 30 years ago. It revolutionised the way we live. It can be a force for good and spawn a lot of evil stuff. I've played a bit with chatGPT. I sometimes use it to make suggestions if I am stuck on a piece of writing. The image creating stuff is fun. But the ability to fake pictures and videos is worrying
