My impression is that artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay. It can be harmful or good, depending on a person’s awareness of the benefits and possible pitfalls.

not a fan myself.

Hi Nancy, Just curious! Do you think it's inevitable that it is and will be woven into the fabric of our lives?

It already is-think algorithms. AI is programmed with the programmer's bias and when you boil it all down, if you exponentially learn a bunch of garbage. You will still be spewing garbage knowledge, just at an increased volume, but I'm just an old Granny. what do I know

So do I and it is very scary in my view.

No, you’re right. Generative AI can be useful if you have to quickly write something for, say, a proposal. I’ve used it once and it saved me a lot of time. However, I’m not a fan, mostly because I think it will contribute to the dumbing down of people and lead to even less critical thinking than we have now.

Hi Teri , That's a good point. AI does have the potential to allow us to do less thinking for ourselves.

AI is like the internet 30 years ago. It revolutionised the way we live. It can be a force for good and spawn a lot of evil stuff. I've played a bit with chatGPT. I sometimes use it to make suggestions if I am stuck on a piece of writing. The image creating stuff is fun. But the ability to fake pictures and videos is worrying

Almost none of the benefits listed are real and as scary as the pitfalls are they do not yet exist...

remember:

it's ARTIFICIAL

it can't actually DO anything other than with it is programmed to do so it isn't good or bad, it just is.

The video, while interesting, is merely fear mongering and it is a scam that people have used without the aid of AI.

Here to stay - yes, so buckle up it will get worse before it gets MUCH WORSE!

Hi John, I do agree.

Hi Janice,

it's just a computer program - not magic, not scary and most likely not able to deliver the fears that are predicted.

In 10 years there will be a new shiny thing in place and no one will remember AI...or the dire predictions of Y2K !

Your point is well taken.

Thank you John. Minds and attitudes like yours and Janice's help neutralize the fear.

I make a good part of my living writing about Artificial Intelligence. AI is already woven into the fabric of our lives. There is no question that the newest form of AI, generative AI, is here to stay. It will change daily life, no doubt in ways that we cannot yet predict. It is the most transformative technology that humans have seen since the Internet.

Generative AI is developing faster than any other technology in human history. The advances the technology has made in 18 months are staggering. There are a lot of issues to work out, such as proper safeguards. But the worst thing people can do is be afraid of the technology or pretend it's going away instead of making an effort to understand and use it.

Hi Joe, I agree - AI is not going away and everyone needs to understand it and how to work with it prudently.

I think the way to deal with the increase in AI or any digital system is to offer ideas on how to move safely through the technological minefield. Otherwise, it's creating a fear amongst the vulnerable. Practical help is the most beneficial to everyone.

Hi Prue I think awareness plays a role, as well. If we know about the plusses and challenges of the system., as you say then we can make wise choices with it in mind.
