As a caregiver, one of my biggest challenges was staying positive - dealing with the day-to-day issues, in addition to maintaining some hope and optimism. A workshop I attended discussed the power of positive thinking, forgiveness, and gratitude.
I like the work of Dr. Rick Hansen, PhD and I think you have referenced him in past articles Janice. He says that we should aim to focus on the positive thing or the gratitude for 17 seconds in order to rewire our brain. The scientists have discovered it takes about that long for the neurons to wire together. I often find this to be a very long time!
I found a way to move into positivity through color. I use my non-dominant hand to color or doodle with colored pencils and markers. I time it for 15 minutes. When finished, I write down 3 things I'm thankful for. That list often turns into 15 or 20 things. Not sure why it works but it is a tool to use in stressful times, and during my caregiving times, it changed my state, and saved me many times.

Forgiving yourself and expressing gratitude - a truly magic combination. The prescription from the Divine Physician, if you ask me! Thank you, Janice.

Hi Donna, I too like Rick Hansen's work. I agree 17 seconds can seem like forever sometimes. Thanks for the reminder!!
