What is one thing we can begin doing today to support our overall sense of well-being, independence, and life satisfaction?

I live in a small rural area I’m 81 so there’s not a lot of things to do in a rural area in this area of Texas

Like others have said I’ve started being kind to myself. I’m not saying this is the overall answer but I get a massage, I get a pedicure and a manicure, I get a facial I read I’m an artist I love helping other people I love listening to other people‘s opinions, I’m not wanting to change their opinions. I just like to discuss different viewpoints of opinions in different locations that we all live and how we grew up it gives me a sense of belonging.

Take a walk, even 10 minutes, in the woods.

A friend runs occasional seminars about mental health - one of her questions was "where do you feel stress". I realized I held mine in my torso/ stomach area. If I feel wound up, I take physical stock and then consciously relax that area. Makes an immediate difference.

Consider the many ways to "age in place" or with other people and work on making it happen.

A very good topic, Janice. One thing to keep me independent is my health. I am an active participant. I try to encourage others to do the same. I had the honor, the privilege and financial resources to he a former patient of the late Dr Atkins. At the age of 39, I made health my upmost primary concern. I had my first meeting with Dr Atkins,a nonsense doctor ! You either do exactly what he tells you or he says, otherwise I do not have time for you! At the time, I traveled to NYC, bus to port authority and taxi to his office, I did not require, The Atkins Diet! What he taught me I still remember over 30 years later. He conducted his own medical research. Real research with variables, and a control group and hypothesis and reported results accurately. He made several of his supplements and a protein shake. I bought it all! It was very costly But I sacrificed many other things in my life because my Health was my priority. Years later I have a complementary medicine doctor who is one of the best. A past supervisor of his was one of Dr Atkins best friends a very knowledgeable colleague at a time you were called crazy to see a complementary medical doctor. And the doctor was called a Quack! Atkins was even imprisoned good smart lawyers had him released. I have an entire library in my dedicated to many doctors who practice Complementary medicine. Each with their own speciality. I wish Dr Atkins was alive now because he was a doctor ahead of his time, Amazing man. I give him all the credit that I can walk and talk and think simultaneously once again. And I had the privilege of being able to honor him with a Thank You for being able to do all of that walking, talking, thinking and etc. He actually had tears in his eyes. I said my file, about 1000 pages long. Re read it and you understand my reasoning for being here to make sure you know what you have done for me, literally I am alive because of your medical training and assistance., Based upon that remarkable experience, I read and I read my complementary books as if I was studying for a comprehensive exams, if I do not know the answer upon questions face to face I just go to basement to get the proper book or books from one or more of my complementary resource library of doctors ! Now, I say Thank yoh to my doctor now. He had put up with a lot from me.! He never complains. I ask a lot of questions I provide information to him for confirmation day and night through texting. And I learn how to take very good my health. Taking care of my health is primary because I can do anything else I want to do. And it keeps me independent. I was raised to be very independent. That characterization is of extreme importance to he the ability to be able to always take care of myself no matter what. And I like sharing my information with others if they want it. I have written an article about expanding or including Heakthcare with complementary medicine, the prevention of blood work all adults should have, the vitamins, the supplements, the names of traditional doctors who turned not to complementary medicine because it gets to the Root cause of an illness or disease. Everyone should have that opportunity to choose and have assistance with finances. I can write about this topic for pages or a book on it. How important it is to be Healthy as it includes our diet, exercise. Supplements, vitamins and doctors who teach you how to take care of yourself. Dr Atkins always said to me How does your body feel on such and such. Start to take notice of how you respond to such and such and always ask questions !!!

I love Dr. Atkins question "How does your body feel on such and such. Start to take notice of how you respond to such and such and always ask questions." It's something I could do for and by myself.

I like to reply to another part of your question. Anger. When I had gotten very healthy. I could have been bitter but I experienced people who I knew who were bitter. They missed so much from life. I vowed never to be bitter or so angry that I felt sorry for myself. I realized if I felt sorry for myself I stop growing as an individual. Who will take care of me. I refuse to go into a nursing home. I learned very quickly to take my anger and find how to express it in positive ways. I asked my parents if I could still live in their house ( after getting healthy) I pay my bills, and I enrolled in graduate school. I paid for graduate school I earned a 3,95 GPA a 4 . 0. I became a Licensed Clinical Drug and Alcohol Counselor( with international alcoholism status) and then earned my second license as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I possess 2 licenses as a therapist. Yes the predicament I had been in of being unhealthy I sued the doctor and won. I took my anger and its energy turned it into positive energy for me to live the life I had always thought I would have until…..

Dr Atkins was a brilliant man. I was in his office. I could hear him think. Such an honor such a privilege. He listen to you before he spoke, ask a lot of questions and then have an answer. I had taken over 50 supplements daily. It was difficult. He even helped me stop cigarette smoking. I stopped immediately. Almost cold turkey from 18 cigarettes or more a day !!! He had such knowledge. People knew him ax the Atkins Diet. He was so much more than that. Much more.
